The route

From Oakville to Pearson on the QEW and 427

The usual path runs east on the QEW, then north up Highway 427 to Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. It covers 35 km, roughly half an hour with open lanes.

Oakville sits on Lake Ontario between Mississauga and Burlington, so nearly every airport trip from here uses the QEW.

Weekday mornings are another matter. Eastbound QEW traffic toward Toronto is slow from about 7 to 9 AM. For a pickup in that window, we suggest adding 20 minutes.

Our airport limo service in Oakville covers every part of town. That runs from older streets south of Lakeshore Road to newer homes north of Dundas Street.

Sheridan College students on the Trafalgar Road campus can share a sedan for the trip home. Split three ways, $82 comes to under $28 each. Burlington, the next city west, is 53 km from Pearson.

Count the suitcases before you choose. The $82 Lincoln MKZ sedan holds 3 people and 3 big cases, which suits most couples and business trips.

A family of five with skis or hockey bags needs the Suburban or the Escalade at $110. Both take 6 suitcases.

Golf groups should book the Sprinter, since golf bags fit along with 12 riders. At $524, a full van works out to about $44 per golfer.

Billy Bishop deserves a look as well. It is 36 km from Oakville, only 1 km more than Pearson, so the island airport adds almost no driving.

Heading home after a late landing, the driver simply reverses the route: Highway 427 south, then the QEW west. Night roads are usually open, so expect close to the 30-minute figure. The $714 stretch limo seats 10, but small bags are all it carries, so it rarely suits a flight. If you need a child seat, it is $15 more.

Train or car

When the train beats a car from Oakville

Travelling alone with only a carry-on? Ride the Lakeshore West GO line to Union Station, and catch UP Express from there to Pearson.

The UP fare is $12.35, or $9.25 if you tap a PRESTO card. That is far below our cheapest Oakville fare.

The train goes the wrong way first. You ride east into downtown, then the airport train heads northwest again, so the trip runs much longer than the 30-minute drive.

Once two or more people share the trip with real luggage, we think the $82 sedan is worth it.

Beyond Pearson

Other airports and Union Station from Oakville

Hamilton (YHM) is 51 km, about 50 minutes, and Billy Bishop is 36 km. Union Station lies 38 km east, Waterloo's YKF airport 81 km northwest, and Buffalo Niagara 137 km around the lake. For most Oakville trips Pearson is the easier pick, since it sits 16 km closer than Hamilton.

Plan it

An early Vancouver flight from Oakville

Take a 7:30 AM departure to Vancouver. Flights inside Canada call for about 2 hours at the airport, so you want to be at Pearson by 5:30 AM.

The drive is about 30 minutes, which points to 5:00 AM. Add a 10-minute buffer, and the car should come for you at 4:50 AM.

Flying overseas from the same gate time? Allow 3 hours instead. Then 7:30 minus 3 hours, minus 40 minutes, puts your pickup at 3:50 AM.
